Data analyst: turn questions into defensible answers.

Choose learning for the analysis, reporting or business intelligence work you need to do. Start with the task and tool environment, then compare instruction, practice and any actual credential requirement.

Data Analyst is a broad title. A reporting job, a Power BI role and statistical modeling can need different preparation.

Research and the private practice task are optional. You can ask a short training question immediately.

Day-to-day work

What does a data analyst do?

  • Clarify the business question, who will use the answer and how each measure is defined.
  • Retrieve and prepare data, check quality and reconcile important totals.
  • Build and maintain reports or dashboards that people can interpret.
  • Investigate patterns and exceptions, then explain what the evidence supports.
  • Document definitions, assumptions and repeatable reporting steps.
  • Support existing reporting tools and communicate changes to their users.

Build skills around the work and its tools

Data quality and definitions

Explain what one row represents, which records belong in a measure and how you checked duplicates, missing values and totals.

SQL and spreadsheets

Practice filtering, joining and summarizing data when the work requires it. Use the employer’s database dialect and spreadsheet environment.

Business intelligence

For Power BI work, investigate data preparation, models, visual analysis and controlled sharing. Microsoft describes Power Query and DAX proficiency for PL-300 candidates.

Explanation and domain knowledge

Connect a result to the question, show important limits and leave enough detail for someone to reproduce or challenge it.

O*NET lists several analysis and reporting technologies, including Power BI and database tools. A specific job may use another stack. Microsoft’s PL-300 profile concerns Power BI work; it does not establish a universal hiring requirement.

Private fictional practice

Can you explain a simple report’s numbers?

A fictional team asks for the count and total amount of paid orders. Work in a spreadsheet, SQL or a reporting tool. Use only these invented records; no real customer or employer data is needed.

Invented practice data; amounts are arbitrary units.
OrderStatusAmount
A001Paid120
A002Paid80
A002Paid80
A003Cancelled60
A004Paid40
A005Paid100
  1. State your measure definition and identify the duplicate and cancelled record.
  2. Produce a checked total and a small report, with repeatable steps.
  3. Change the question: a manager now wants refunded orders handled. Identify the additional rule and data you need before changing the result.
  4. Explain the answer, checks and unresolved assumptions in a short note.
Inspect one possible check

Counting each distinct paid order once gives four orders and 340 units. Preserve the excluded records for review. A different measure needs its own definition and checks.

Dated occupation context

What salary evidence can this page support?

$120,230U.S. annual median · May 2025
Data Scientists · SOC 15-2051

BLS reports this median for Data Scientists. Its 10th and 90th percentile thresholds are $67,240 and $199,130. These describe that broader occupation’s distribution, not a Data Analyst pay range, entry offer or credential premium.

The task profile above uses Business Intelligence Analysts. The wage and outlook context rolls into its broader Data Scientists parent occupation. Compare an actual vacancy’s responsibilities, location, experience and compensation separately.

BLS projects 35% growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 24,800 openings per year for Data Scientists. Read the occupation’s outlook; these are not a forecast for Data Analyst jobs alone.

Choose learning for the gap

SQL, Power BI, foundations or an exam requirement?

Use a job requirement or work task to choose the scope. There is no automatic best credential for everyone using the Data Analyst title.

SQL and reporting practice

If you need to retrieve, join or summarize data, targeted query practice may be enough. Microsoft’s beginner Transact-SQL learning path covers queries, joins and grouped results and asks for familiarity with tables. It applies to Microsoft SQL; check your own dialect. Public lessons and personal exercise access are separate.

Broader analytics foundations

Google’s Data Analytics Certificate is a course-completion learning program. Google describes an entry route without prior experience, with high-school-level math. The current Coursera listing names SQL, Tableau, Python and a capstone. Google’s overview still contains R copy elsewhere; confirm the selected curriculum and language before enrolling. This does not establish Power BI depth or a job outcome.

A named vendor-neutral exam

If a requirement specifically names Data+, inspect the Data+ scope, recommended background and preparation choices before buying. It is a separate exam decision, not a compulsory next step after the Google program. Check its source dates and the selected offer before buying.

Compare self-paced, live virtual and classroom offers

Self-paced: check exercises, feedback, access expiry and the delivered software environment. A lesson library and supported practice are different purchases.

Live virtual: check instructor interaction, class hours, time zone, practice access and review of your work.

Classroom: verify the instructor’s location, equipment, travel and whether teaching is actually delivered remotely.

For Microsoft instruction, check the Training Services Partner evidence for the exact delivering entity and region. Ask for the selected course version, licenses, labs, support, voucher terms, cancellation and total invoice. Authorization and a course listing do not establish a bookable seat.

When the work is deeper or different

Statistical modeling and machine learning need their own preparation. Production pipelines, data platforms and reliability are another responsibility: compare data engineering learning. Read the actual role instead of treating analyst, scientist and engineer as interchangeable titles.

Match preparation to the actual opportunity

Employers set their own hiring requirements. BLS describes degree expectations for the broader Data Scientists occupation; that does not establish a universal Data Analyst degree or training prerequisite. Compare the actual job’s tools, domain knowledge, experience and evidence of work.

If you have useful domain experience, identify which analysis or reporting tasks you need to add. If you are starting from scratch, compare a structured foundation with guided practice and feedback. Buy an exam only when it serves an explicit requirement or a considered learning decision.

Turn the work gap into a training question

Name the task, tool environment, what you can already demonstrate and the practice or feedback you need. Add an actual employer requirement, timing or budget when known. The detailed planner is optional.
